Mozambique weather is classified as warm and tropical. There are however marked regional variations. As a whole though, Mozambique weather follows similar patterns as other countries situated in the southern region of Africa, its inland areas slightly cooler and more humid during the rainy season, in comparison to the country’s coastal areas.
Mozambique weather along the coast retains a sunny, warm disposition throughout the year, even during the crude winter season when other areas of the country remain under the spell of chilly conditions. Summer season in the coastal areas rolls in October and bids goodbye in April; weather in the region is typically rainy, humid, and very hot. In contrast the winter season - April to September – is cooler, drier and rather more welcoming and comfortable for overseas visitors not initiated to the peculiarities of Mozambique weather. Daytime temperature averages along the coast hover between 24° and 27°C, occasionally rising to 31°C.
Mozambique’s north-eastern coast is the hottest and most humid in the country (conditions often becoming intolerable), and the high-altitude regions of Nampula and Niassa provinces the coolest, tending to steer clear of chilly conditions.
Between the months of October and March, the rain season is well and truly at its peak in the south parts of the country, while in the north the season is extended by six weeks each way. During the rainy season, temperatures in Mozambique reach their peak. There is very little variation in precipitation levels between the country’s north and south regions; average annual rainfall along the coast line is 800 to 900mm.
By around April or May the rains begin to subside, the clouds part to let the glorious sun shine its magic over the land heralding the arrival of better conditions throughout the country. Dry season is officially on by June; running through to October, Mozambique weather is at its finest and most pleasant. Humidity drops considerably, the skies are permanently clear and rain is almost absent. Even though temperature reaches over 30°C by day, by night it tends to drop dramatically.
November is characterized by its unpredictability; rain makes its first appearance, intercepting the predominantly sunny, hot conditions.
